Campaign manager: Indra Harwanto
Partner: Ujung Kulon National Park
The Ujung Kulon National Park, Indonesia's first national park, is located in southwestern Java and includes many important habitats. The park includes the largest remaining lowland rainforest in the Javan plain, Coral Sea habitat, several offshore islands and inland volcanoes. Most notably, the park is home to the largest population of the critically endangered Javan rhinoceros. Ujung Kulon is one of only two remaining habitats that supports the estimated remaining fifty to sixty rhinos. This dwindling species is poached for its horn, which is considered to have great medicinal value in some cultures. Its habitat is also disappearing quickly due to development and agriculture.
Indra Harwanto of the Ujung Kulon National Park launched a Rare Pride campaign to protect the park from further human encroachment. With the Javan Rhinoceros as its mascot, Indra strives to increase local people's knowledge of the national park's zoning regulations, as well as create an agriculture intensification system to protect Rhino habitat outside the park to enable farmers to optimize their land holdings and avoiding seeking new land in the park.
By building local support for conservation, Indra Harwanto hopes to halt deforestation into park lands, educate local communities in the park zoning regulations and see an increase in the rhino population from 60 to 72 by 2015.
