Keith joined Rare from Conservation International (CI), where he led their social science research program, evaluating the costs and benefits of conservation for people living near sites of irreplaceable biodiversity value. He also directed a strategy support unit guiding CI’s national conservation programs in biodiversity hotspot countries on ecotourism, agroforestry, environmental education, and conservation policy reform. 

In the 1990s, Keith was founder and executive director of a local conservation group (Instituto de Estudos Sócio-Ambientais do Sul da Bahia) in Bahia, Brazil. During this period, he was also a professor at the State University of Santa Cruz, in Ilheus, Brazil. Before moving to Brazil in 1989, Keith was an assistant professor at the University of Florida and obtained his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1985. When not at Rare, he enjoys cycling and camping.
